The Department offers one (1) Academic Programme viz:


The Religious Studies programmes are designed to cover all the facets of religious phenomena as they affect the history, tradition, economics, social, political and ethics of man. The effect of this approach is to develop man in his existential reality to produce an all-round society in realizing life objectives.

Aims & Objectives

  • (i) To acquaint students with the main contents of the major religious traditions commonly practiced in Africa, namely: Christianity, Islam and Traditional Religion. The programme does not present any religious system as a sui generis exclusivist system; hence it also delves into other world religious phenomena such as Buddhism, Hinduism, Shintoism, Zoroastrianism and Jianism.
  • To equip the products of this programme for the teaching career, administration, social work and offer them solid academic background for the professional degrees in Journalism and Law.
  • To orient students towards developing minds of a broad spectrum conducive to a pluralistic society such as Nigeria.
  • Interpreting the Bible and Christian tradition from an African perspective;
  • Explaining ethical relationship in a multi-religious society like Nigeria;
  • Delineating impartial approach towards the handling of religious concepts;
  • Resolving conflict from religious and Afro-cultural standpoints;
  • Handling problems and challenges of religious belief in a science–oriented environment;
  • Explaining the resilience and challenges of African Traditional Religious and Cultural belief in a Christian-dominated environment.

The University Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) Entry Mode

Applicants for admissions through UME must be holders of the General Certificate of Education (G.C.E), Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSSCE), National Examination Council (NECO) or its equivalent with five credits including English Language and Christian Religious Knowledge.

Direct Entry Mode

For admission by Direct Entry (DE), candidates must have one of the following qualifications:

  • Five G.C.E papers of which three must be credits in ordinary level and two passes in Advanced level including Christian Religious Knowledge.
  • Holders of the 2-year Diploma from other approved Universities,
  • A 3 year Diploma of recognized theological Institutions (admitted by Direct Entry for 3 year programme).
  • The Direct Entry requirement for candidates holding a Diploma in Religion in a recognized institution with not less than a merit Level Pass shall have credit level passes in G.C.E/SSCE (or their equivalents) in five subjects, which may or may not include Christian Religious Knowledge but with a credit in English Language.

Job Opportunities

Graduates of this Department have opportunities to undertake advance studies in disciplines associated with religious and socio-cultural studies. Consultancy and employment opportunities abound in Bible translation agencies locally and internationally for graduates of Religious Studies.

Graduates of this programme are also trained to work in corporate bodies, companies and institutions as Public Relations Personnel and other related opportunities which require high ethical principles, as well as in conflict resolution related outfits. With a degree in Religious Studies, students gain analytical skills and ability to formulate and defend positions. Thus, they are ideal candidates for pursuing a carrier in business and administration.

Jobs more closely related to religious studies is Lay Minister/ Pastoral Caregiver, Counsellor, Community Advisor, Management Trainer, Customer Services Representative, Community Project Coordinator, Aid Organisation administrator, Government/ Institution Policy Analyst, Peace Corps Officer, Ministry of Arts and Culture. They can also engage in self-employment as consultants.
