Introduction

The department of Psychology of Coal City University Enugu runs a four-year standard programme leading to the award of B.Sc. Honours Degree in Psychology. It also offers a three-year programme for students with Advanced level papers at the General Certificate of Education Examination, the Higher School Certificate Examination or other relevant qualification.

Philosophy and Objectives

A degree programme in Psychology seeks to fulfill a number of inter-related objectives:

  • To ground the students in the Principles, Philosophy and method of Psychological investigation of Human and animal behaviour with emphasis on the Biological, Psychological and Socio-cultural influences.
  • To give students an initial training in the different Professional areas that will enable them seek and appreciate careers as psychologists in such applied fields as education, medicine, industry, prisons, admin the armed forces, social welfare etc. with particular reference to the needs of Nigeria and Africa.
  • To generate in students an appreciation of the importance of psychology in a developing Third World society like Nigeria in relation to industrial, economic, environmental and socio-cultural contexts, issues, problems and policies especially as they relate to existential and epistemological values, attitudes and beliefs
  • To provide students with a broad and balanced foundation of psychological knowledge and practical skills.

It is important to point out that while professionalism in psychology requires a good post- graduate training, the holder of a first degree in psychology has a lot of careers in such employment areas as teaching and educational Admin, the health sciences, industry and commerce, social research and public service.

The University Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) Entry Mode

Candidates for admission into the four-year degree in Psychology should possess a Senior Secondary School Certificate or General Certificate of Education, NECO or their equivalents with at least five credit passes including Mathematics, English language and Economics at not more than two sittings. In addition, candidates must have acceptable passes in UTME.

Direct Entry Mode

Candidates for Direct Entry admission shall possess five credits in GCE, SSCE, NECO or their equivalents, of which at least two shall be at Advanced Level, provided that such passes are not counted at both levels of the examination. For emphasis, English language, Mathematics and Economics are required at credit passes.

Their background in meticulous scientific research, coupled with their in-depth understanding of human thinking and behaviour, make them some of the most versatile graduates in the market. Psychology graduates can offer research skills, and data and numerical skills, which are vital in sectors like Finance, Banking, Accountancy or Insurance. An ability to work with numbers, apply them in real world situations, and subject them to analysis is something employers in these fields look for and something which Psychology graduates can offer. On top of their research skills, Psychology graduates are able to understand peoples thought processes and behaviour.


This knowledge and experience is important in fields like Advertising and PR, Retail, Management, Media and Human Resources. Psychology degrees are applicable to nearly any customer or client-focused industry.
