The Department offers two (2) Academic Programmes viz:


Introduction

On 22nd November, 2016, the National Universities Commission approved the issuance of provisional licence for the establishment of Coal City University, Enugu, with the commencement of Business Administration programme. The first set of the students numbering eight were admitted for the 2016/2017 academic session. The pioneer Coordinator, Department of Business Administration was Dr. Barr. Chukwuemeka Nnadi.


Undergraduate programme in Business Administration is a four year course leading to the award of Bachelor of Science Degree (B.Sc). The programme is designed in line with the minimum standard of the Nigeria Universities Commission (NUC) with focus on the basic & core areas of Management, Marketing, Finance, Industrial Relations, Corporate Strategy, Business Policy, Production Management, Organizational Behaviour and Entrepreneurship Studies by employing management principles, philosophy and objectives.

Philosophy

The general philosophy in this department/programme is the belief that training will expose and develop the mind, impart both theory and practical knowledge on the individual students, develop self reliance and self confidence, and help the students to be innovative, creative in the fields of Administration and Management.

Aims and Objectives of the Department

The major objectives of the degree programme in Business Administration are:

  • To develop the necessary administrative tools that will enable the individual take up managerial positions in government and private sector like banks and other financial institutions, and to succeed in self employment.
  • To feed students with general exposure to business studies for undergraduates to prepare them for future managerial positions.
  • To offer students with academic exposure to the literary foundations and recent developments in the field of Business Administration.
  • To fit undergraduates with modern techniques for the practice of Business Administration.
  • To kit students of Business Administration with analytical skills needed for recognizing, defining and solving problems, training in decision making
  • To equip undergraduates with financial management tools for self-employment and personal financial management.

Admission Requirements

Universities Matriculation Examination (UME) Applicants must possess at least the minimum pass mark in the UTME and at least five (5) credits including Mathematics, English and Economics or Commerce in West African School Certificate Examination or National Examination Council (NECO) at a maximum of two (2) sittings.

Job Opportunities

Graduates are prepared to occupy job openings across industries and companies. The degree would help graduates start business, manage a business and how to help a business grow. Graduates are also employed in diverse ministries and parastatals.

General Philosophy

Marketing in the Faculty of Arts, Social and Management Sciences offers a four-year degree programme leading to the award of the Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing. The Programme is based upon the philosophy of a broad-based education by noting that marketing is an eclectic discipline which depends heavily on Social Sciences, Humanities and Natural and Physical Sciences.

A student of Marketing needs both theoretical and practical knowledge to be equipped with the necessary tools to face the challenges of the competitive economy. Emphasis is placed on self-reliance and self-employment to enable students to contribute their full quota to national development and professional career as well. To this end, therefore, the programme emphasized both education and training in General Marketing Research, Advertising, Public Relations and Transportation.

Objectives

The Objectives of the programme are as follows:

  • To educate students in all aspects of business administration beginning from the first two years of the programme.
  • To instill in students broad understanding of marketing and related subjects beginning in the third and fourth years of the programme.
  • To prepare students for responsible positions in industrial, commercial, Government, Public service and private Establishments.
  • To furnish students with the knowledge and techniques required in problem solving and decision making.
  • To prepare students for careers in Marketing, Business Management, Public Relations. Advertising, Marketing Research, etc.
  • To kit up students with leadership skills and knowledge needed in business, commerce, industry, government and management.

Job Opportunities

Graduates are prepared to occupy middle and senior level management positions in business, commerce. industry, and government, and can set up their own business since the programme also emphasizes self-employment.

Admission Requirements for UME

UME candidates must possess at least five O/L Subjects at credit levels passes including Mathematics and English language in the West African School Certificate Examination or G.C.E. or NECO obtained at not more than two sittings.


Admission Requirements for Direct Entry

Direct entry candidates must in addition to general requirement must have passed Economics at Higher School Certificate (H.S.C.) at Principal Level or at the General Certificate of Education Advanced Level, with Mathematics and English language at the G.C.E. Ordinary level or with credit in WASC/SSSC. Also, candidates with the National Diploma (ND) obtained from accredited Institutions with passes in Economics and Mathematics at the Upper Credit level can be admitted by direct entry.
